Students need positive reinforcement for their behavior and I will always advocate for positive reinforcement. However, there are times when students need consequences but the consequences must relate to the offense. Today’s show will share some ways I handled consequences with my students.
I still remember the day I had a full on war with a student trying to pull a pencil out of his hand simply because I told him he needed to give it to me.
Fortunately (although at that time I was really embarrassed) the behavior interventionist was in my room with me and coached me through how to handle that situation the next time.
Consequences in the Classroom
Here’s something that took me a few years to learn. As a teacher, you are not in control of your classroom. Your students are.
I hate to break it to you, but it’s the truth!
However, with effective classroom management and consequences, boundaries, and expectations set up in advance, you can help yourself and your kids out.
In today’s show I talk about how I switched my language from redirection to constant praise. I also share about my favorite way to give students consequences for behaviors- Recess Academy.
I also share some ways I implemented consequences in my classroom.
But here is what I want you to know- this is HARD. And it doesn’t come right away. Six years in and I was still figuring this out. I hope this podcast will share some ideas with you that you can either use or adapt for your classroom.
I’d love for you to have a listen HERE. And I would especially love it if you shared it with your other teacher friends!!!
